A Short History of Lorem Ipsum
Examples of and background to the most famous placeholder text
The text known as Lorem Ipsum has long been used to give writers and publishers an idea of what their finished product will look like. As such it serves as a convenient way to visualise the layout of a printed work, without having finalised the content. But where does it come from, and what does Lorem Ipsum actually mean?
The original Lorem Ipsum
There exists many variations of the Lorem Ipsum text, but the original is generally quoted as:
"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum."
So what does it all mean? Well, nothing really. The text is designed to appear latin in the structure of the words, but it is mostly grammatically incorrect. However, the origins are indeed partly latin, as some parts of the text appears to be a scrambled version of Cicero's work De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum.
