Website updates at ATP

- for the department and for the three research areas

The department of astronomy and theoretical physics website (www.atp.lu.se) needs to be updated (again). This because we must follow the guidelines drawn up by the Government Interoperability Board and the guidelines of the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) by the organisation W3C.

Once www.atp.lu.se has been updated the three research pages (astro, tpp and cbbp) also need updating and thereafter all webpages for individual researchers.

Current websites are located on three different servers:

(current) members of the web-group:

  • Carl Troein
  • Ross Church
  • Eva Jurlander
  • Stefan Prestel
  • Anna S. Arnadottir

Our mission is:

  • To try to understand the new web accessibility directive
  • To publish and accessibility statement on each website
  • To form a long term strategy (in collaboration with the department prefects) for where to host our sites, what system we want to use and who should administrate them.
  • Build and publish websites that comply with the new web accessibility directive.

Directive (EU) 2016/2102, in force since 22 December 2016, will provide people with disabilities with better access to the websites and mobile apps of public services.

Comparing Typo3 to Drupal

Typo3 pros:

  • www.atp.lu.se is already hosted there
  • Internal site that requires lucat-ID login
  • Time limited elements

Typo3 cons:

  • Editing rights for employees needs to be approved by the LTH web department.
  • Difficult to reach the LTH web department
  • Experience shows that those with access do not spend much time editing the website.

Drupal pros:

  • Drupal 8 just came out and has the "new look" already
  • Better support available
  • 3 access levels:  Admin, editor, writer
  • Online course for editors and administrators of system.
  • Writer access can be distributed rather freely among the staff
  • Admin rights will lie with someone at the department
  • Staff websites can be generated automatically, and then edited by members of staff
  • Drupal is technically better than Typo3 when it comes to the accessibility directive

Drupal cons:

  • No closed internal pages with login
  • All our pages need to be rebuilt from scratch

Action points

  • Apply for Drupal access
  • Administrators need to complete the course
  • Re-building the websites, starting with www.atp.lu.se
  • Launch www.atp.lu.se (and thereby stop using Typo3)
  • Keep pc500 and Willam for now, but start building the "research" sites (astro, cbbp, tpp) on Drupal
  • Eventually:  Move all research sites and personal websites to Drupal, keeping only minimum amount of content on our own webservers.
  • Far future??:  Shut down our own web-servers??
